CHAPTER TWELVE

“He could have ducked between any one of these buildings,” Mitchell says. “I can’t believe he got away.” He slams his fist against the side of his leg.

“He admitted to being there in the six o’clock hour. That could mean he’s the killer. He could have been hiding out. We need to get into his apartment and find out if he owns a fedora.”

“You think he’s the killer?” Mitchell asks me.

“I think he’s guilty of something. Innocent people don’t run away from cops.”

“Hey!”

We turn to see the cashier standing in the doorway of the convenient store.

“I know where he lives if you’re trying to track him down,” she says.

“We know his address. We just came from there,” Mitchell tells her.

“Your boyfriend told us to check here for Dale.”

“Oh, you met Jared. I guess he was out on his morning run.”

I nod. “Have you ever seen Dale wearing a fedora?”

“That’s a hat, right? Or is it that scarf thing guys wear?”

“The scarf is called an ascot. A fedora’s a hat,” I say.

She bites her bottom lip. “I’ve seen him wearing hats before. Mostly baseball caps, though. Why?”

“We’re investigating a murder that took place on Main Street a few days ago. A suspect was spotted wearing a fedora,” Mitchell tells her.

“Do you mean that psychic woman?”

“Yes. Did you know her?” I ask.

“No, I was at a party at her house once, though. She did readings for some of the people there. It totally embarrassed her son. He left his own party.”

Mitchell gives me a look, and I know what he’s thinking. I’m wrong to insist the killer was one of her clients. “Do you know if her son owns a fedora?” Mitchell asks her.

“I’ve only met him that one time. I was invited to the party through a friend of a friend. But the guy wasn’t wearing a hat that day.”

Mitchell grabs one of his cards from his pocket and hands it to her. “If you remember anything else about Dale, Julie Smith, or her son, would you give me a call?”

“Sure.” She hitches a thumb over her shoulder. “I should get back inside. I’m on the clock.”

“Thank you for your time,” Mitchell tells her before she disappears inside. “I’m going to call Wallace and have him try to track down Dale. Fleeing during questioning gives me enough reason to haul him to the station to finish interrogating him.” He gets on the phone to make the call.

I check the text Dad sent me with the addresses of all four clients. The only one we haven’t looked into is Mona Patterson. The silhouette I saw in my vision looked male, but I’m not willing to bet money on it just yet. This person could have been wearing clothing that would purposely disguise their gender.

“All taken care of,” Mitchell tells me. “Wallace will call me when they bring him in.”

“I have Mona Patterson’s address. I guess we go there next.”

We head back to Mitchell’s patrol car, and I can’t help thinking we’ve been too lucky as far as locating these clients.
